BACKGROUND
The Small Business International trade Program was established in January 1986 as a result of a grant from the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The SBITP is the international SBDC for Oregon and is hosted by Portland Community College.
MISSION
To educate, train and counsel small businesses in Oregon to become active and successful in international trade.
OBJECTIVES
To be a catalyst by offering workshops, seminars and classes on exporting, importing, and other international trade subjects.
To be a conduit by referring Oregon businesses to local, national and international public and private sector resources.
To provide counseling to small businesses entering or expanding their international trade activities.
SERVICES
1. FIRST FRIDAY
A three-hour seminar held each month from 2 - 5 p.m., providing an introductory overview for newcomers to international trade. Presentations are given by Federal & State representatives, international freight forwarders and bankers plus other international trade organizations. They share information on services and resources available to Oregon businesses considering international trade.
2. TRADE TUESDAY
A series of international trade seminars on the major activities, disciplines and functions of importing or exporting. Presented by experienced professionals in a practical, "how-to" environment. Seminars can be taken individually or as a series and are designed to prepare businesses to successfully participate in the international marketplace.
3. INTERNATIONAL FAST-TRACK FOR UNTRIED EXPORTERS
A process of on-site, in-depth assessment interviews determining the export readiness of a company. Seminars and on-site counseling developed to assist companies in a step-bystep process to enter foreign markets.
4. STATE-WIDE REGIONAL TRADE COUNCILS
A network of regional trade councils each managed at the local level by a coalition of private and public sector interests; administered by the local small business development center; provide focus and forum for international trade development.
5. COUNSELING
In-depth, one-on-one assistance to Oregon small businesses on the techniques, procedures and strategies of international trade.
6. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS EXCHANGES
Group education and business exchanges between Oregon businesses and entrepreneurs of developing countries entering the free market economy. This alliance assists businesses to develop profitable and productive enterprises and enhances international trade opportunities.
7. NATIONAL TRADE DATA BANK
An invaluable computer program issued by the U.5. Department of Commerce, updated monthly, as a resource for exporters to learn about export markets, analyze patterns of exports and imports by country and commodity, learn about trade practices of foreign countries and to develop contacts for distributing their products.
Small businesses play a critical roll in Oregon's economy. Oregon's location, its strong emphasis on small businesses, international trade and growing economy ensure Oregon's success in international business in the 90's and beyond.
