The Mexican Air Force in World War II
P-47 Thunderbolt fighters flown by the "Aztec Eagles" of the 201st Squadron of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force attack a Japanese truck convoy in the province of Ifugao in central Luzon, the Philippines, in Jume, 1945. The Squadron flew close air support missions, assisting American and Filipino ground troops in the liberation of the Phillipine Islands from the Japanese occupation in World War II. The unit was decorated by the governments of the United States, Mexico and the Philippines for valor and sacrifice in the cause of freedom. It was the only Mexican military force ever to serve outside of Mexico. Of the 31 pilots who flew combat missions, five never returned from the war. |
